On April 26,the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency filed arrest warrants for movie actress Yoon Seol Hee, 28, and actor-model Ye Hak Young, 26 on the basis of smuggling narcotics into Korea. (Yoon’s and Ye’s full names were not originally released; however, recent articles have identified them.) The police also booked Ju Ji Hun along with two non-celebrity civilians for taking the illegally imported drugs. The police are reportedly charging Ju for two instances in March of 2008 when he took drugs while with the others. All five individuals will be sent to the public prosecutor’s office in the beginning of May.
According to the police, Yoon purchased drugs from an acquaintance in Japan and hid them in her underwear to take them illegally through customs. For a year from August 2007, Yoon received one million won from selling the drugs to buyers such as Ye. Yoon is suspected of importing 280 tablets of ecstasy and 280 grams of ketamine through 14 trips back and forth from Japan. Ju acquired an amount from Yoon, and proceeded to take some two or three times at Ye’s home in March of 2008.

A representative of the police agency stated that this is the first time a celebrity has been caught directly importing, selling, and taking narcotics. They suspect that there are others who were involved (financially or through intake), and will continue to investigate the situation.

Yoon has appeared in minor roles in various films such as Tazza and A Good Day for an Affair. Ye most recently participated in the music video for Seo Taiji’s “Juliet”. It is yet to be known how this will impact Ju’s pending Japanese fan meetings and Tokyo Tower drama project.

Whoa. Five people have been busted for drug trafficking, selling, and/or use — and three of them celebrities.

Most shocking is the involvement of popular actor Joo Ji-hoon, of movies Antique Bakery and The Naked Kitchen.

A representative from the Seoul police’s drug investigation department told reporters on April 26, “Joo Ji-hoon was investigated and admitted to drug use.” Joo reportedly bought the drugs — which include Ecstasy and Ketamine — from a fellow celebrity. Two non-celebrity individuals were booked for drug use along with Joo, but the three were not jailed. Police have filed for arrest warrants for the traffickers, movie actress Yoon Seol-hee and model Yeh Hak-young.


According to the police, Yoon is suspected of having received approximately 100 million won ($75,000) from Yeh and others between August 2007 through December 2008. She allegedly traveled from Japan fourteen times to purchase, smuggle, and sell Ecstasy and Ketamine. (Yeh supposedly accompanied her several times.) The drugs had been smuggled into the country by concealing them in underclothes worn by Yoon.

Joo Ji-hoon is thought to have used the drugs on two occasions along with the other reported individuals, at a Kangnam club and at home.

The 26-year-old Joo Ji-hoon shot to fame after acting the lead role of the prince in the incredibly popular teen drama Goong (Princess Hours) in 2006, which he followed with the dark thriller drama Devil in 2007. Most recently, he took the lead in the manga-adapted film Antique Bakery and the offbeat romance The Naked Kitchen.

YIIIIKES. I’m guessing he’ll be dropped from the Tokyo Tower remake now — if not prevented from acting altogether. Drug use — particularly in South Korea — is a big, big deal, and potentially career-killing stuff. Don’t do drugs, folks![/color]

Actress Yoon Seol-hee is the main player in the drug scandal that erupted over the weekend, but as Joo Ji-hoon is the most recognizable name, he’s getting a lot of the attention. There’s also some confusion about the facts, but to reiterate: Joo Ji-hoon was NOT arrested for trafficking the drugs, dealing, or for possession. He was charged with using.

Here’s a rundown of some of the facts and new info:

Yoon Seol-hee was arrested on April 26 for trafficking ecstasy and ketamine into South Korea from Japan, which she then sold. She allegedly made a total of fourteen trips between August 2007 and December 2008.
Model Yeh Hak-young was arrested for supplying Yoon with 100 hundred million won with which to buy the drugs. Both Yoon and Yeh also took the drugs.
Joo Ji-hoon was booked without detainment on the 26th (along with two non-celebrities) for drug use on two occasions at drinking parties in March 2008.
There have been celebrities in the past who have been busted for drug use, but this is the first instance involving the smuggling and sale of them.
The police are currently working to confirm Yoon’s confession that there were 15 others who took the drugs from her, and are looking into her phone records as well.
According to police, these include at least a couple of easily recognizable names. Some reports say there are seven or eight entertainers in all, other say at least five. One in particular is “a famous singer who appears on television talk shows frequently.” The rest are host bar employees.
I know the situation isn’t funny, but this tidbit is as hilarious as it is gross: Yoon smuggled the drugs past customs by inserting them into a menstrual pad (ewww!), which she then wore over an extra pair of underwear.


Naturally, people are wondering what made Yoon Seol-hee do such a risky (and stupid) thing.

Yoon had bit parts in several films, but hadn’t been able to get her break and took other jobs working in bars in Seoul’s upscale Kangnam district.
She had been increasingly worried over growing debts, according to friends.
Yoon appeared in small parts in movies like A Good Day To Have An Affair and Sex is Zero 2. She played a room salon girl in both the film version of Tazza (aka The War of Flower) and the television drama On Air.


As for Joo Ji-hoon’s future:

He has been dropped from the Tokyo Tower remake. No surprise there, particularly because the scandal has been picked up by Japanese media and reported “with particular gravity.”
The Tokyo Tower production, which stars Kim Ji-soo, is not canceled at the moment. A production representative said, “We’re planning to cast a different actor in Joo Ji-hoon’s place and begin filming at the end of May or early June.”
Joo was planning two Japanese fanmeetings on May 15 and 16 in Osaka and Yokohama, which may be canceled. Both events sold out on the first day, which means that cancellation may result in a lawsuit. Worst. Birthday. Ever.
Joo’s two recent movies also have shaky futures in Japan: Antique Bakery is currently screening there, and The Naked Kitchen is scheduled to release at the end of May.

All Joo Ji-hoon events canceled

The names aren’t out yet, but we do get a few initials and hints as police look into the circle of acquaintance of the celebrities booked in the drug scandal:

Joo Ji-hoon’s two Japan fanmeetings have been canceled. Tickets will be refunded.

His film The Naked Kitchen (co-starring Shin Mina and Kim Tae-woo) was scheduled for a May 30 release in Japan, but is canceled as well.

Will Joo Ji-hoon be held responsible for Tokyo Tower’s problems? He has already been dropped from the cast, but things get complicated because the production received several billion won from Japanese investors who had put up the funds with the stipulation that Joo Ji-hoon be cast in the drama, banking on his name value. Now that he is no longer involved, the entire production is endangered. One source with the production hinted that Joo bears some responsibility for this.
One industry rep said, “Before the drug case, Joo Ji-hoon was deemed an actor with enough name value to bring in investments. The atmosphere has completely reversed now.”

Drug scandal gets Joo Ji-hoon banned from KBS

After actor Joo Ji-hoon (Antique, Goong) was named in the recent drug scandal for recreational drug use of ecstasy and ketamine (which got the main supplier, actress Yoon Seol-hee, tossed into jail along with her financial enabler Yeh Hak-young), Joo was the center of the ensuing media frenzy. He was dropped from his latest drama and had his birthday fanmeeting in Japan canceled.

Now Joo, who may face trial for his drug use, has been banned indefinitely from appearing on broadcast station KBS “until his [legal] punishment is decided.” Naturally, this also applies to Yoon Seol-hee and Yeh Hak-young, but I think they have bigger things to worry about, such as going away to prison for many, many years for drug trafficking.

This is not the first time an entertainer has been banned because of a drug scandal; for instance, singer Jeon In-kwon and actress Go Ho-kyung received similar punishments for marijuana use last year and in 2006.

Furthermore, KBS is also banning actor Na Han-il, but his crime is a white-collar matter. Na, who was appearing on the SBS historical drama Ja Myung Go, was caught taking illegal loans of more than 10 billion won and was also suspected of bribery.

MBC and SBS are expected to follow suit with similar decisions.

주지훈의 법정 대리인 이재만 변호사가 주지훈 마약 복용에 대한 오해를 해명했다.

이재만 변호사는 10일 오후 서울 서초동 변호사 사무실에서 해명의 자리를 갖고 "주지훈이 클럽에서 마약을 복용한 것처럼 알려졌는데 주지훈은 마약 상습 복용자가 아니다. 지난해 봄 만취한 상태에서 친구가 '좋은 것'이라 권하는 약을 먹은 적이 있다. 하지만 클럽에서 마약을 상습 복용한 적은 없다"고 말했다.

이어 "2008년 3~4월께 친구 집에서 있었던 일이다"며 "그날 친구집에서 만난 예모씨는 모델일을 할 당시부터 친분을 쌓았다. 윤모씨는 그날 처음 본 사람이었고 직업이 뭔지도 몰랐다. 이번 사건으로 윤모씨가 마약을 밀수한 판매운반책이란 것을 알게됐다"고 밝혔다.

또 "주지훈은 만취상태지만 엑스터시를 먹은 후 너무나 무섭고 두려워 그 자리에서 '다시는 안하겠다'고 말했다. 이는 그 자리에 있던 사람이 수사기관에서 진술한 바다"며 "그 이후로 약을 먹은 적 없다. 친구 예모씨도 멀리했다"고 전했다.

또한 "1년 2개월동안 불안과 고통속에서 지냈다"며 "1년2개월 전 복용했기에 물적 증거도 없는 상태다. 실제적으로 소변, 모발검사에서도 음성 반응이 나왔다. 하지만 주지훈은 물적증거 없는 상태에서도 경찰에 자백을 했다. 스스로 자신이 창피하고 한심하고 양심 반하는 거짓말 할 수 없었다. 경찰서에서 모든 것을 다 이야기하고 죄값을 받겠다는 입장이었다"고 설명했다.

이재만 변호사는 "주지훈이 지명도가 있는 연예인이기에 지난해 봄 단순 복용 후 약에 손을 댄 적이 없는데 마치 클럽에서 상습 복용한 사람으로 취급됐다. 사회로부터 죄지은 것 이상의 가혹한 처벌을 받고 있다고 본다. 하지만 주지훈은 죄인의 입장에서 아무런 변명하지 않고 반성의 시간을 보내고 있다"고 강조했다.

또 "이번 재판에서 선처하면 입대하겠다는 말 때문에 오해가 생겼는데 실제적으로 그 말은 군복무 열심히 하면서 자숙하겠다는 뜻이다"며 "오해가 없었으면 좋겠다"고 덧붙였다.

한편 이에 앞서 검찰은 지난 9일 서울중앙지법 형사합의27부(부장판사 한양석)에서 열린 결심공판에서 마약류 투약 및 밀반입 혐의(마약류관리법 위반)로 주지훈에게 징역 1년에 추징금 44만원을 구형했다. 법원의 최종 선고는 6월23일이다.

마약 복용 혐의에서 불구속 기소돼 재판을 받고 있는 주지훈이 법률 대리인을 통해 팬들의 선처를 당부했다.

주지훈 사건을 담당하고 있는 이재만 변호사는 10일 서울 서초동에 위치한 자신의 사무실에서 "주지훈이 마치 클럽에서 마약을 상습 복용하는 것으로 알려져 있는데 2008년 3, 4월께 친구의 집에서 1, 2차례 단순 복용했을 뿐"이라고 사건 경위를 밝혔다.

그는 "주지훈이 엑스터시 복용한 후 1년2개월 동안 불안과 고통 속에서 지냈다. 당시 너무 무섭고 두려워서 그 자리에서 다시는 안 하겠다고 했고 실제로 소변과 모발 등 검사에서 음성 반응이 나왔다"고 말했다.

이어 "주지훈이 물적 증거가 없는데도 경찰 조사에서 자수한 것은 자신이 너무 창피하고 한심해서 양심에 반하는 거짓말을 할 수 없었다고 한다. 그래서 경찰서에서 모든 것을 다 얘기하고 죄값을 치르려고 한 것"이라고 해명했다.

이 변호사는 또 "지난 재판에서 선처하면 입대하겠다는 말 때문에 오해를 많이 받고 있다. 군대가 마약하는 사람들의 복귀처냐는 비난의 소리가 있는데 그런 게 아니다. 주지훈이 군대갈 나이가 됐고 군 복무를 열심히 하면서 자숙하겠다는 의미"라며 오해가 없기를 바랐다.
